NEW POLL NUMBERS SAY HILLARY IN GOOD POSITION FOR 2008

This is the first official post of what I am sure will be many over the next three years regarding Campaign 2008.

Today, CNN released a poll that says 53% of respondents said they were "Very" or "Somewhat" likely to vote for Hillary Clinton for president in 2008.  Those saying they were "Not at all" likely is 39%, down from 44% in a poll two years ago.

Of course it is WAY too early for us to feel confident in these numbers (the "not at all" likelies outnumber the "very" likelies by ten percentage points), but I don't mind saying I got a little giddy when I saw this.  Just the thought that it is possible gives me goosebumps.

She is historically a polarizing figure, to be sure, but if she wins re-election to the Senate by a significant margin in 2006, continues to earn the respect of her Senate colleagues, and works to be a leader in the party while building bridges with moderates who once viewed her with disdain, then she will be in a good spot when primary season begins in two years.  But, alas, this poll is just a snapshot of right now.  Bush's approval numbers are down across the board, and respondents may be reacting to that.  But I choose to get a little hope from this, and remember that at the very least Bush will be out in 2008.

Very likely:  29

Somewhat likely:  24

Not very likely:  7

Not at all likely:  39

UPDATE:  For all you Slate clickers, leave a fucking comment and tell me what a waste of your time this is. Luvyameanit.

She should not run, at least not yet. Too polarizing. Too many people HATE her and would never, ever vote for her: 1] Because she's Hillary and B] Because she's female. She would lose the South automatically, and therefore lose the election. Name a Southern state Hillary would win? Hopefully, Democrats can find someone with broader appeal, less baggage, and a little more charisma. (Anne Richards isn't dead yet, is she?) Unless Republicans put up a three-headed baby-eating monster, or David Duke, Hillary has no chance.
